Rep. Diana DeGette , D-Colo., plans to offer an amendment tomorrow in the House Energy and Commerce Committee that would require public disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, according to her spokeswoman. Hydraulic fracturing involves shooting a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals underground in order to "fracture" rock that contains natural gas. The method is widely used to recover gas from North Texas' Barnett Shale, where the concern has been about toxic emissions more than water pollution (which is the dominant worry in states like Colorado and New York.)
